General Information on Nepal
Nepal, Kathmandu as its capital, is a Federal Democratic Republic, divided into 7 Provinces (Pradesh) and 77 districts. The country is land locked, situated between China in the North and India to the South, East and West covering an area of 147,181 sq. km . The northern part is covered by Mt. Everest and other mountain ranges, covered with snow all the year round; the middle part is low hills, mountain area and the southern part is plain that adjoins India. The estimated population is 26.49 million (2011Census) with 68.08 life expectancy for male and 71.06 for female. Nepali per-capita income is about US$ 1000.00, a good sign targeting the country to graduate from the least developed to a developing one by 2020. The country’s literacy rate is above 65 percent with nearly 97 percent of school going age children enrolled in the basic-primary schools. Nepali is the official national language with the existence of 123 other national languages. It is a secular country with dominance of Hindu and Buddhist religions followed by Islam, Christianity and Sikhism.

The monetary unit is the Nepalese Rupee which equals 100 paisa. One Indian rupee is equal to 1.60 Nepalese Rupee and it is 115.00 NRS for 1.00 US$ as of now, Sept.2018. All International credit cards are accepted in established hotels, restaurants, department stores. Banks are open from 10.00 am to 4.00pm ( Sunday to Thursday) and 10.00am to 12.30pm(on Friday).
December is the beginning of the winter; it is reasonably pleasant with cool evenings and sunny during mid-day, warm clothes are recommended.
The staple foods are: Rice, wheat, other cereals and vegetables. European, non-European and continental foods are easily available.
